Flatscapes

“My aerial Flatscapes harmonize color-formed pictorial space with realistic but color-modified land patterns.”

– Harold Gregor essay, Harold Gregor’s Illinois

“The quilt-like geometric configurations of the fields, roads and buildings compose striking, near-abstract compositional patterns and they are complemented and enlivened by a play of rich, fruity, non-naturalistic autumnal colors.”

– David Sokol essay, “Changing Perspectives: The Landscapes of Harold Gregor,” 2016

“The first Illinois Flatscapes were derived from photographs that Gregor took from small planes. These large paintings use striking color, pattern, and texture to draw our attention to the unseen beauty of a landscape purposefully molded by human activity.”

“In choosing a specific image as the source for a painting, I look for several things. One is the angle of the shot. It should approach flatness, yet not be completely flat, so as to create a sense of tension… I find myself increasingly concerned with the time of day and quality of light… Now I prefer the low-raking shadows that occur in the late afternoon and evening… I want expressive light that suggests a mood.”
